Get to know me

Hello, my name is Erica. I’m a Birth Boot Camp certified Atlanta birth doula and childbirth educator.

I am 33 years old and have lived in Georgia for most of my life. I have a wonderful husband and we have a beautiful, spirited two year old daughter together. We also have three fur babies, one cat and two dogs (all rescues). When I’m not busy learning about all things birth-related, I enjoy documentaries, reading, and I’ve recently started cross stitching.

My prior career has always involved working with women. Prior to becoming a doula and childbirth educator I was a licensed cosmetologist and makeup artist. I have always loved working with people, in particular women and have enjoyed the intimate nature of my work. I believe there is nothing more powerful than the power of touch. I very much enjoy the connective nature of this work and the work of my past careers.

My birth, the reason I'm passionate about childbirth

When I found out I was pregnant, very shortly after getting married, I was in shock as it was a result of a failed IUD. We were very lucky that my daughter continued to thrive in utero, despite all odds. As time passed I began to think about what I wanted my birth to look like. Having a doula and taking childbirth classes helped me immensely to achieve the goals that I had for myself and the birth of my daughter.

On February 1st, 2018, after 19 hours of labor I had a medicated, vaginal birth at Northside Hospital. I can honestly say that it was the hardest yet most rewarding thing that I have ever accomplished. I had wonderful support from my doula and my husband. While I was not able to achieve all of my birth goals due to certain circumstances, I felt very prepared and knowledgeable, which empowered me immensely while giving birth. My thankfulness for the education and support that I received led me to become a childbirth educator and doula. I knew that I wanted to give this precious gift to others within my community.

My doula & childbirth education experience

My doula and childbirth educator was a wonderful Atlanta birth doula named Alexa. I really got to know her very well during and after my pregnancy. I was a very anxious first time mother and I had many questions about pregnancy and birth related things and she was able to help gently guide me through it all. The breakthrough moment happened when my husband and I took our 6 week in hospital childbirth class. Whew, there’s a lot of information that goes into pregnancy and birth! But understanding what was happening to my body and what was to come with labor and the postpartum period helped to ease my anxieties. I felt prepared for the big day!

When I finally went into labor, my doula met us right at the hospital and was with us from the very start. It was such a comfort to know that someone who understood what I was going through was going to help guide me through this experience. She was tender, gentle, and caring, and respected my wishes and helped ensure that others did as well. She helped my husband to connect with me and nurture me through this process. I truly believe that my birth would have looked a lot different had she not been there. I will be forever thankful to her, and the comfort she provided me during the birth of my daughter.

Why I became an Atlanta birth doula and childbirth educator

When I became pregnant with my daughter my head was spinning. I went down the rabbit hole on Google and quickly realized that I felt like my husband and I needed more education on childbirth, and I learned about doulas. I knew instantly that I would benefit from adding one to my birth team. My husband and I were so relieved. We empowered ourselves by learning about pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period and what to expect. My doula was such a comfort to my husband and I while I was giving birth.

I guess you could say that after I gave birth I was bit by the birth bug. I became fascinated and intrigued by birth. I knew that I wanted to contribute to my community by helping teach people the information they needed to empower themselves to have the birth that they desire. I knew I wanted to be an Atlanta birth doula, to connect with people and be their trusted person of support during their most intimate event of their lives. What a truly amazing and rewarding career this is!
